Defiance moved into its third season by making some huge changes to the status quo. Some turned out way better than expected, while others were more of a letdown. With the finale feeling like it may very well be the end of the series, how did Defiance shape up overall? New storylines, new characters, even a new race of Votans… but was it well executed, or did many things end up being rushed to fit this apparent finale?
With an even more final-feeling finale than last year’s, Defiance puts an end to the Omec threat once and for all by having everyone work together for once. Look at that, it only took a potential extinction-level event to get our characters off each others’ throats!
All the Omec wake up and invade, and all the building of trust and hope for Trek-like peace ideals are thrown to the wayside. I guess we shouldn’t have expected anything else, eh?
Nolan is taken to South America and found guilty of murder.
…Just kidding. Did you really think Nolan would be held responsible for his actions? Then you haven’t been watching the same show I have. Sigh… nope, a bunch of easily avoided mistakes happen and we lose one of the good things about this season. Somebody wake up Sukar, time to go soul-spelunking in the underworld!
People everyone thought were dead come back to town, and Nolan fucks things up royally once again. In other words, just another day in Defiance.
T’evgin shows his commitment to peace through killing, While Nolan enters a self-destructive spiral a little too rapidly. Everyone’s mad at him, which normally would be fine. The only problem is… this is the one time he doesn’t actually deserve it!
Episode 8 has an incredibly wordy title, probably one of the longest episode titles I’ve ever seen, but it’s also one of the best episodes of Defiance ever. Maybe they should just start giving every episode a ridiculously long title?
This week’s episode puts Berlin in the spotlight for once. Plus Datak shows his more honorable side and Stahma cowers in the corner. It’s like we’ve entered the world of Mirror-Defiance or something! Well, except for Nolan, but I guess he’s one of those things that’s the same in all universes.
Defiance seems to be back on track with another strong episode this week. Well, with one really weird exception. And we all know how that went with the “one weird exception” of last season’s sixth episode…
This week is a marked improvement over last. We get some backstory on Nolan, finally, but it comes across as more of an excuse than an explanation. On the other hand, things are looking up for Alak, and that’s who we actually care about, right? New opening credits are just made of sad, though…
